Board Member Spotlight - Meet Rich Shuman

Rich Shuman is an owner and operator of RD Shuman Farms. The farm consists of 750 acres, 92 of which are owned and 658 are rented. He is a grain farmer, raises dairy replacements and feeder beef. He custom harvests an additional 200 acres and supports his parents’ 500-acre operation with some management decisions. The operation has expanded into contract vegetables for a cannery in 2020 and looks to continue that enterprise into the future. Rich’s wife, Deb, is a math teacher and they have a son, Steven, and a daughter, Courtney. We asked Rich a few questions about what inspired him to join AgChoice. Check out his answers below, and be sure to say hello at our next event!

One fun fact about your business or career:

I am a ninth generation farmer and enjoy collecting Minneapolis Moline equipment literature and sales promotion items.

Why did you choose to work with AgChoice for your financing needs?

I choose to work with AgChoice because the employees and leadership all focus on making my business more profitable and efficient.

Why did you decide to run for the Board of Directors?

I learned the importance of community and volunteering at a young age. 4-H and Boy Scouts were the foundation for my basic community service. Today, I am a volunteer firefighter and officer of the fire department. As a farmer, I am involved in the agricultural industry by serving on Columbia County FSA committee, spending eight years as Pennsylvania Farm Bureau State Director and participating in many other Ag related organizations locally, statewide and nationally. I feel I have my thumb on the pulse of modern agriculture and can help the current generation and the next generation to strive for success in a very demanding and enjoyable career.

Advice you’d share with other customer-owners considering running for the nominating committee or a board seat in the future?

Keep an open mind. Agriculture is always evolving.  Science and technology have us moving at a faster pace than ever before. Learn to network with other professionals, in our career field and outside of it.

AgChoice has the pleasure of working with a dynamic Board of Directors that helps to provide strategic direction and oversight. Interested in becoming more involved with AgChoice? For more information on becoming a member of the AgChoice Board of Directors, view our Board Leadership Brochure.
